Renting an electric car

Searching for an electric car

When searching for a car, you can filter for electric cars by opening Filters > Fuel type and selecting Electric.

Some electric cars are distinguished by a badge in the search results saying either Free charging or Initial charge included.

When you are looking at a car profile, it will be clearly stated if the car is electric at the top of the page beneath the car’s rating.

To read more about an electric car’s specific charging requirements, refer to the details provided in the car profile.

What to expect when renting an electric car

Our app will guide you as much as it can through the process of renting an electric car, but if you are ever in doubt, we always recommend messaging the owner and asking for help.

Who pays for charging?

Different cars have different charging policies. When you are looking at a car’s profile, scroll down to the Charging policy section. Here you will find information about what to expect when picking up the car, including details on who pays for what and if the car needs to be plugged in upon return.

How do I charge an electric car?

Charging differs depending on the model of car you’re renting.

To get the help you need, we suggest the following:

  1. Many owners will provide instructions in the app. Open the app and you will see the Booking details of your current rental. At the bottom of the page under Your rental, there should be a link called Good to know during the rental.
  2. If you can’t find what you’re looking for, message the owner and ask them for help.
  3. You can also search “How to charge” and the specific car model you are renting on a search engine of your choice.

Generally, charging a car will be similar to this:

  1. Open the charging port by pressing gently on the outside or using a button inside the car.
  2. Take the charging cable out of the trunk and connect it to your car and the charging point.
  3. Begin charging by following instructions on the charging point.
  4. Unplug the charging cable and return it to the car’s trunk.

Where can I find charging stations?

Search “Charging station” in your favorite map application. If you’re in doubt, plan ahead before your rental and note down where charging stations are located on your route.

How far can I drive an electric car?

The range of an electric car depends on the size of the battery, how the car is driven, and environmental factors such as temperature. For example, driving slowly in a city will use less battery charge than driving fast on a highway.

What if I need help during a rental?

Navigate to Rentals and choose the booking you are interested in. At the bottom of the page under Your rental, there is a link called How charging works, which will explain the full details of that specific car’s charging features and requirements.

Some owners will also write specific information about their electric cars in the Good to know during the rental page, which is found at the bottom of the page in the Your rental section.
